George Roy Hill (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) directed this 1988 comedy that gives star Chevy Chase one of his better-quality vehicles. Chase plays a New York sportswriter who turns to the country for a simpler, happier way of living. He discovers, of course, that things dont work out that way. Hills usual touch with comic timing, tone, and dialogue give Chase a rare career opportunity to be part of something a little classier than most of his other movies but Funny Farm nevertheless has its share of so-what gags. I think I have now seen this movie about 40 times. I just had to buy it on DVD since my VCR has died.
I have even had a dog and named it Yellow Dog LOL.

This movie isnt usually hyped as a Christmas film but I watch it every holiday season. Chevy Chase is his predictable clueless, bumbling self, but isnt that what we love about him? He and his wife, the always hot Jennifer Esposito, think they have found their dream home. With problems from the day they move in it only gets worse once they meet the townspeople. Finally having enough of each other and the town, they embark on plan to sell their house by paying the citizens to dress and act like characters from the covers of Saturday Evening Post. Norman Rockwell come to life. Of course things do not work out exactly as planned, but still a happy ending!

This is one of my favorite comedies. Everyone I show it to laughs hard throughout it,and I still do,as well.

Andy quits his job as a sports writer and plans on the peace and quiet of Vermont country life to be an aid to writing the novel he has always wanted to write.

The story is about the misadventures that he and his wife Elizabeth experience,and there are so many with wacky town residents,a maniacal mailman,worthless dogs,and other critter adventures,and through it all scenery that is absolute eye-candy.

I highly recommend this one for lots of laughs.

Gregory McDonalds lightweight mystery novel about an undercover newspaper reporter cracking a police drug ring is transformed by screenwriter Andrew Bergman (Blazing Saddles, and writer/director of The Freshman and Honeymoon in Vegas) into a fairly sarcastic and occasionally very funny Chevy Chase vehicle. Enjoyment of the film pivots on whether you find Chases flippant, smart-ass brand of verbal humor funny, or merely egocentric. If you dont like Chase, theres really no one else worth watching (Geena Davis is sadly underused). Chase seems born to play I.M. "Fletch" Fletcher, a disillusioned investigative reporter whose cynicism and detached view on life mirrors the actors understated approach to comedy. Fletcher offers Chase the opportunity to adopt numerous personas, as his job requires numerous (bad) physical disguises, and much of films humor centers on the ridiculous idea that any of these phony accents or bad hairpieces could fool anyone. These not-so-clever disguises are put to use when Fletch becomes involved in the films smart but continually self-mocking two-part mystery. As well as trying to gather drug-smuggling evidence against the LAPD for a long-overdue newspaper story, a rich and apparently terminally ill stranger also offers Fletch a large payoff to kill him. While the film does a fairly good job juggling both of these plots, not to mention tossing in a love interest as well, its subservient, for better or worse, to Chases memorable one-liners and disguises. Not at all what Id expected having seen other Chevy Chase comedies. The very idea of disguising the main character was pretty good, but what kills the film is an almost absolute lack of plot.

Lots of pointless slapstick and mugging, but Landis hasnt made a genuinely funny film since Trading Places. Aykroyd and Chase seem smug and self-satisfied (dont they always?), as though they can rest forever on laurels earned during the 1975 season of Saturday Night Live. this was one of the first DVDs I ever owned. only wish it was in true 16x9 and in Hi-Def Blu-Ray. maybe in time it will be on Blu-Ray. WB has not done a Remastering (1998 Pan&Scan Only Verson as of 4/2008) of this great funny film that stars the Beautiful Donna Dixon who IMHO would look GREAT IN Hi-Def!! :)

Whether you grew up during the Cold War or afterwards, youll love this comedic reminiscence of the Reagan era. In my opinion, this is Chevy Chase and Dan Akroyd at their finest. Basically theyre low level government employees who get caught cheating on departmental exams. The CIA needs two decoys for an important spy operation, so they are chosen, and eventually end up in Pakistan and the Soviet Union.

I own close to 300 movies and this movie is near the top of my favorite all time movies. Enjoy!

I was extremely disappointed with this film. Its a terrible shame because I love Dan Akroyd! It just wasnt funny at all. At some points I was bored to the point of wanting to go to sleep. Chase and Akroyds characters never reached the potential they seemed to have at the beginning of the film, and the attempts at humor were ridiculous (in a bad way). Im not sure how this has 4 stars here on amazon. I generally love comedies and am rarely ever disappointed with a movie, but thats exactly what happened with this one. Surely pass this one up.

Premise: Dan Akroyd and Chevy Chase are actually caught cheating on the Foreign Service exam and "promoted" to be spies.

It is a funny movie, with some great sequences. It seems like the kind of movie that would be funnier the second or third time around - or maybe late at night. Overall, I enjoyed it, but it wasnt the type of movie I would seek out again. Somewhat crude humor - not one for the family, but a fun movie overall.

Freddy Benson (Steve Martin) is a crass, loud American. Laurence Jameson (Michael Caine) is a suave, urbane European. Their common ground is that they both are confidence men, and they meet in a train compartment as Benson is scamming his way across Europe, taking advantage of womens generosity. The two are forced into a rivalry, which culminates in a wager to see who can be the first to bilk $50,000 out of American heiress Janet Colgate (Glenne Headly). Their game of one-upmanship is, of course, brought to ridiculous heights as things progress. Written by Paul Henning (the mind behind such TV shows as Green Acres and The Beverly Hillbillies), Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is an uneven but funny mix of Martins physical comedy and Caines oily charms. Martins first role as cohort is to assume the persona of Ruprecht, the "special" younger brother intended to scare off potential brides. As Ruprecht, he comes off as a cross between The Andy Griffith Shows Ernest T. Bass and Jerry Lewis hilarious as it is, it doesnt quite fit with the rest of the film. Once the wager is on, though, Martin slips into his overly earnest mode as an American military man suffering from hysterical paralysis, with Caine as a psychologist who takes on his case. All in all, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (a loose remake of the 1964 film Bedtime Story with David Niven and Marlon Brando) is a droll, intelligent comedy, short on knee slappers but long on comic situations and characterizations. --Jerry Renshaw

At first, Lawrence agrees to help Freddy spruce up his talents and his wardrobe. But when it becomes apparent that the Riviera isnt big enough for the both of them, they make awinner-take-all wager over the fortunes of a naive American soap heiress (Glenne Headly): the firstone to "clean her out" can make the other clear outand keep the Riviera and its unsuspecting tourists to himself!

I really dont watch this movie often enough. The few times Ive seen it over the years provide superior entertainment, but its a film I seem to forget about. That shouldnt be the case: its a terrific movie.

Ive never met anyone who did NOT like this film. It seems to appeal to a lot of people, young and old. The three leads - Steve Martin, Michael Caine and Glenn Headley - were all in top form, on top of their "game," so to speak.

Martins facial expressions and physical humor are terrific and Caine played his part magnificently, too. I enjoy Caine much more in here than Martin (and in most films) but Steve seems to have the funniest moments in this movie. At any rate, both are superb as antagonists "Lawrence Jamison" (Caine) and "Freddie Benson" (Martin). The two men have the talent to pull off slapstick as well as subtle comedy. Headley, as "Janet Colgate," meanwhile, is a joy to watch and to listen to, with that sweet voice of hers. I cant say more about her without giving away too much but she is not only the objection of attention in the movie, but the key character. These three combine for almost a laugh-a-minute.

This also is a good example of how to make a modern-day comedy without all the sleaze and profanity. Its highly recommended.

The ending of the film is a shocking conclusion that leaves the veiwer gasping.In conclusion, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is an absolutely wonderful comedy that all can enjoy, with an excellent cast and story such as this, you cant go wrong. Im an avid reader, but it wasnt until I read Spirit that I felt compelled to submit a review. This wonderfully entertaining novel about a young woman with clairvoyant abilities is the sort of book you just cant put down once youve started to read it. I have recommended it to all of my friends. I think its fascinating reading for anyone who lived during the 1930s and 1940s, for anyone who is interested in the occult, and for anyone who just enjoys being engrossed in an unusual story. I believe this is Dolores Riccios first novel. Im hoping it wont be her last.

I just read Spirit and fell in love with this story. Ms. Riccios books are always such a pleasure to read and her characters are so well written that you feel as if they are people you know. Spirit takes place in the 1930s and 1940s, has a wonderful love story, and quite a bit of intrigue during the years of World War II.

Brigits psychic abilities begin in childhood and her loved ones arent supportive of her gift. This makes much of her early life difficult until she learns to keep some things to herself. Put together by Abbas own Benny Andersson and Bjrn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroups songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and shes trying to identify which of three men is her father. Thats about it. Wisely, the musical doesnt mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeuss songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Two years ago I had the opportunity to attend Mamma Mia on Broadway in NYC with a couple of friends. It was great! Immediately after, we went to a music store and my friend purchased the CD. Driving home from Minneapolis for 4 hours, we put in the CD and sang our heart out. The music is wonderful, the movie is great! I soon purchased my own copy and have all the songs memorized. At our memorial day program this past spring, our friend sang "Thank You for the Music" dedicated to all the fallen comrades and friends and family that had recently passed on. It was very touching. Yes, I love it!

I absolutely love this CD and have played it many times. I thoroughly enjoyed the music. I also have the soundtrack from the movie, but this CD is much better. This one also includes "Thank you for the music" as a separate piece. And that is my favorite from the whole play.

That particular song was just sung during the credits in the movie and its not even listed on the play list, so you really cant access it separately. Its just part of the last song, "I have a dream" on the movie CD. And there is a very long pause before you even get to it on the movie version. You could miss it if you didnt know it was there.
It was worth buying the Broadway sound track for that song alone.

Rented the movie "Mama Mia" before purchasing. I am glad I did. Very disappointed as ABBA is one of my favorite groups and was looking forward to adding this to my collection. I could only take the first 10-15 minutes. Gratuitous foul language and over the top performance by the actors soured this for me. I would expect the exaggerated gestures, facial expressions, and volume at a live performance where the audience is far from the actors. But in a movie where everyone is 5-10 feet fron the tv set it seemed odd and out of place. Maybe if I would have watched a little longer things would have improved, however, by then I was totally turned off.

We cant say this is the worst CD weve ever heard, but it ranks waaaaay up there. We have nothing against the acting talents of Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, but their vocal "talents" leave much to be desired. Out of tune, off pitch and capable of causing more body upset than an cup full of kalamatas, the "singing" is more like croaking. Lauren Bacall and Katharine Hepburn and Rex Harrison could get away with it on stage. This Greek chorus cannot. When all is said and done the name of the game here is (save your) money, money, money.

To me, MAMMA MIA is a great movie (I am not referring to as musicial). I will give 4 stars for the acting. But for the singing, I would say, good attempt. For all ABBA and MAMMA MIA muscial fans, you might be a little disappointed with this Soundtrack or the movie.
For those who never seen MAMMIA MIA muscial, pls go and check it out, you will be amazed. There are more songs and "real" sinings.
Still for me, this is Soundtrack is enjoyable and it is nice to see they brought MAMMA MIA to big screen.

I absolutely LOVED this movie! The scenery was beautiful, and Meryl Streep and everyone else totally entertained me. Thats what I look for in a movie-to be entertained. I thought the singing was great-I even enjoyed Pierce Brosnans singing. He tried hard and did a good effort. It was definitely a feel good movie!
